Official rates
In June 2023 the Tourism Department notified fixed rates for shikara rides on Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake:[1][2]
| Ride | Rate (per shikara) |
|---|---|
| First hour (up to 3 km) | ₹700 |
| Each extra hour | ₹400 |
| Full day (6 hours) | ₹2,700 |
| Crossing to a first-row houseboat | ₹50 |
The department also notified fixed fares for set routes, such as trips to Charchinar and Hazratbal, and said operators who overcharge could lose their licence.[2] To check a fare or complain, the Tourism Department numbers given were 0194-2502512 and 0194-2502276.[1]
Ways to book
- At a ghat — the simplest way. Agree the time, route and price first.
- Through your houseboat or hotel — most can arrange a shikara, including the transfer from the ghat.
- Uber Shikara — launched in December 2024 with government-regulated rates; rides are booked in the Uber app 12 hours to 15 days ahead, run 10 am – 5 pm, last an hour and take up to 4 people.[3] Check in the app that it's still running.
- Through a travel company — see shikara listings.
Agree before you board
- How long the ride is, and where it goes
- The total price for the shikara (not per person), and whether stops are included
- Where it ends — back at the same ghat, or at your houseboat
- Whether waiting time at stops is charged
Keep the operator's name or shikara number, in case you need to raise a complaint.
